What’s the point of managing our poker bankroll?  Well because no-limit hold’em poker has an element of luck you can not win every hand and you can not win every time you sit down.

Most people fail to realise this and do not have enough money to cover the games they are playing in. The variance in poker can be quite large meaning that you might be doing everything right and playing winning poker yet you still lose night on night!

It happens to every single player if they continue to play.

If you do not manage your bankroll correctly and you play for a long enough period that variance including card distribution has time to have an effect you will end up going broke!

The amount you actually need in your bank roll can be worked out by quite a complicated formula, it involves your win rate which unless you have played tens of thousands of sit n go’s or millions of hands in a cash game you can only guess what your win rate actually is.

But there is good news!

We can follow some guidelines that will keep us in the game for a long enough period to ride out the nasty downswings that will occur. (The following guidelines are what I think all players should follow if you are to be comfortable playing without having to think about depositing ever again.

The following will be calculated by multiplying the total buy in cost of any game. So If the buy in is $10 and the rake is $1 the Total buy in is $11.

-         Hu                  – 60 buyins

-         6 man             – 100 buyins

-         9-10 man       – 125 buyins

-         18 man           – 150 buyins

-         45-90 man     – 200 buyins

-         180 man        – 300 buyins

Example if you are playing in a 9 man sit n go which cost $6.50 to enter then in your poker bankroll you would need to have $812.50. This may seem like a lot but if you are to truly Learn How to Play Poker you need this kind of buffer.
